Former Senator John Grant first came to Tallahassee in 1965, where he worked in the Institute of Governmental Research at Florida State University. He holds bachelors and masters degrees in government and political science and a Juris Doctorate degree, as well as two honorary doctorates. He has worked in state and local government in city management and was appointed to a position in the US Department of Education by President Ronald Reagan.
First elected to the Florida House of Representatives in 1980 and then to the Florida Senate in 1986, he has served with six Florida governors through twenty-one years as a member of the Florida legislature, where he chaired seven standing and numerous select committees. He has also served on the faculties of The University of Tampa, Hillsborough Community College and the University of South Florida, teaching law, government and politics. Over the years, he has received many legislative awards and has been selected as “legislator of the year” by numerous organizations. As a Senator, he created the Office of Statewide Public Guardian and after serving in the Senate became its first Executive Director under appointment by Governor Jeb Bush. While serving in the House and Senate, he authored more than five hundred bills that became law.
